Lawson, Shuja set up big USA win

Seamers Jermaine Lawson and Usman Shuja picked up three wickets apiece, as USA crushed Bermuda by six wickets in Selangor. Shuja's 3 for 12 meant he overtook Zamin Amin to become USA's leading wicket-taker in 50-over cricket.

Bermuda, having been inserted, were rocked early in their innings. Lawson, who had played 13 Tests for West Indies before moving to the USA in 2010, had qualified to play for the country based on the ICC's four-year residency requirement. On Thursday, he made his debut, and with his very first delivery, dismissed the opener Terryn Fray. Bermuda continued to lose wickets at regular intervals, as Lawson and Shuja wrecked the team's top and middle order. Allan Douglas top-scored with 36, but was one of only three batsmen to collect double-digit scores, as Bermuda were bundled out for a paltry 106 in 26.5 overs.

USA lost three wickets inside 11 overs of their chase, but they were never really in trouble hunting such a small total. Captain Steve Massiah struck two fours and three sixes during a 27-ball 31, as USA eventually overhauled the target in 21.5 overs.

Fifties from Mpho Mukobe and Brian Masaba and a collective bowling effort from Uganda set up their 20-run win against Nepal in Kuala Lumpur. After Uganda scored 203 for 8, Davis Arinaitwe and Roger Mukasa took seven wickets between them to dismiss Nepal for 183.

Asked to bat, Uganda were in a spot of bother early on when Sompal Kami and Paras Khadka reduced them to 23 for 5 within 14 overs. A 137-run partnership between Mukobe and Masaba for the sixth wicket revived their fortunes to take them past 150. Mukobe's 84 included six fours and three sixes, and Masaba struck five fours in his 51, before both fell in successive overs. No. 9 Jonathan Sebanja's two sixes made sure they went past 200.

Nepal got a steady start with a fifty from opener Naresh Budayair, but no batsman could build a substantial partnership with him. Nepal were 122 for 5 in the 38th over when Budayair fell for 62. They needed 75 from the last 10 overs and Mukasa (3 for 28) and Sebanja (2 for 28) ensured Nepal were all out in the penultimate over. Arinaitwe finished with figures of 4 for 33.

A half-century from the opener Arjun Mutreja helped Singapore to a narrow victory against Malaysia at the Selangor Turf Club. Chasing 199, Singapore were precariously placed at 68 for 3 in the 18th over before Mutreja and Christopher Janik rebuilt the innings with an 83-run stand for the fourth wicket. Mutreja struck 10 fours during his 73, while Janik's 32 included three fours. However, both batsmen were dismissed within six balls of each other, and Singapore still needed 48 runs.

Fast bowler Hassan Ghulam then picked up two more quick wickets on his way to collecting 4 for 15, reducing Singapore to 171 for 7. Singapore's captain Saad Janjua, however, hit a run-a-ball 32 with four fours to ensure that his team overhauled the target with seven deliveries remaining to complete a two-wicket win.

Malaysia, having been inserted, had earlier collapsed to 198 all out. Fifties from Anwar Arudin (51) and the captain Ahmed Faiz (57) had the team well-placed at 136 for 2, but Mulewa Dharmichand (3 for 27) and Abhiraj Singh (3 for 43) wrecked their top and middle order, as Malaysia lost their last eight wickets for just 62 runs.
