Ben Stokes and Eoin Morgan choked! End of story. The long chat Morgan had to Stokes at the start of that last over was too long and must have reduced the clarity in Stokes's mind. Morgan should have just given a few seconds of suggestions and encouragement instead of going on and on and you could see that Stokes did not try any variations in the four balls, sign of a mind that is not clear.
In 2007, Flintoff teased Yuvraj - he hammered England and eventually won the World Cup for his country. In 2016 another Englishman Mark Nicholas did the same to West Indies, and they thrashed England in both games - and won the World Cup too!!! Isn't it a good omen - an Englishman poking and that country wins the World Cup :)
Stokes would never have got to bowl that last over had it not been for the three catches he took. As for the tactics, he can change or do the double bluff and bowl exactly the same ball a second time. The problem is, he's bowling to an uncomplicated biffer who will give everything the long handle, not a top order batsman. He isn't going to think like that. He's unlikely to think beyond see-the-ball-hit-the-ball. Probably stood a better chance than a top order batsman. No overs from Moeen Ali - a bit of a surprise to me. Anyhow, two sixes unlikely, four a miracle. You can't set a field for a miracle.
Everything I've seen Carlos Brathwaite say since the final indicates he's a young man of great class. I wish him every success in the future (I'm English).
I am going to disagree on whatever is said about Stokes in this article by various cricketers. The reality is that Stokes ruined the efforts, within 3 balls of the final over, all the hard work and efforts of bowlers and fielders persisted for 19 overs. Whatever a decent bowler can dream to defend in the last over was at his disposal...more than 15 runs to defend and a non-recognized batsman as a striker.....He had only one Plan in his mind and that was to keep trying yorkers. And they all (except the first ball) turned out to be half volleys and kept on landing in the hit zone of the batsman. Two sixes were more than enough to change the line of attack but this brainless fellow tried the yorker even after the scores were levelled. Bravery and stupidity are separated by a very/very fine line......and what Stokes did in the final over cannot be classified as bravery.
Yes, these things happen in Cricket. I, however, am not sure why he bowled the same delivery all 4 times he got hit for sixes. Maybe he needed to take a step back, take a deep breath, and then try a slow bouncer/other variations. He should look at Dhoni - how he ran with the ball for the run out that ensured that the worst case scenario would be a tie with a bowl out against Bangladesh. In cricket, as in real life, you cannot get carried away and need to have presence of mind.
Its not clear who posted Roosevelt's sayings. Is it a cricinfo's insert OR Darren Gough OR Andrew Flintoff?
People wil remembr that eng played final of this WC unlike other teams who couldnt go beyond super 10...
Failure was not just for Strokes but the entire team. As someone highlighted all balls were same length and line. No one talked to him. One ball differently and could have got diff result
Nobody will remember after few years, those who will born here after will not give a damn about it just like we don't give a damn about Pakistan team of 80-90's
