Scorecard
Jason Roy's one-day career-best 141 set up England Lions for a 70-run victory in Kimberley which gave them a 2-0 series lead, but they had to withstand Reeza Hendricks' fantastic hundred which matched Roy's score and threatened to marshall a huge chase after the Lions piled up 376.
Lions, or A-team tours, are meant to prepare players for the international arena and this match, on the traditionally flat surface, certainly gave the 22 players involved a flavour of the high-scoring ODIs which are becoming more common.
Roy and James Vince, the Lions captain, formed the backbone of their innings with a second-wicket stand of 198 in 26 overs on a pitch that Roy later described as "beautiful early on." Roy motored to an 86-ball hundred before being caught at deep midwicket having collected 13 fours and six sixes. Vince looked set to join him with three figures but was given lbw for 99.
The pitch remained perfect when the South Africa A openers got their turn with Hendricks, who has played five T20s for South Africa, and Test opener Dean Elgar added 142 in under 18 overs.
When Elgar fell to left-arm spinner Stephen Parry - the only bowler to concede under five-an-over in the match - the Lions gained a hold of the chase, but it was not until Hendricks fell for 141 in 37th over, driving to cover off Ben Stokes. that they could be completely confident of victory.
"It's been fantastic," Roy said. "We got a good total for them to chase, and the bowlers came out firing. They got off to a hell of a start so we really had to dig in, and we got over the line.
He also acknowledged the efforts of his fellow century-maker. "That was a proper knock," he said. "He played some great shots, it was great to watch. Him and Elgar were awesome. But we go on to Potch, it's all good, happy days."
