Hastings was one of the country's most famous grounds and the furore that surrounded its sale was intense but ultimately in vain - it has now been built over and is a shopping centre. Opened in 1864, it hosted many matches and was an immensely popular festival venue with Australian sides playing there 18 times. Sussex's last game there was in 1989 and the ground was levelled at the end of 1996.
