Jaques joins NSW as assistant coach

Former Test opener Phil Jaques has joined Cricket New South Wales as an assistant coach. Jaques retired from playing for New South Wales after the 2011-12 season but will return to the organisation to help head coach Trevor Bayliss, while also working closely with the state's youth teams.

He will also serve as a specialist coach for the Cricket New South Wales Academy programmes, mentoring players based in Sydney and regional New South Wales, as well as providing support to Sydney grade clubs. The state's new general manager of cricket, David Moore, said it was pleasing to have a man of Jaques's experience on the coaching staff.

"Phil Jaques has enjoyed a very long and successful first-class career," Moore said. "He has accumulated a lot of knowledge over this time which he can now pass on to players training in Cricket NSW Academy Programs all over the State. As a cricketer he was known for his professionalism and attention to detail, and he will set a fine example for the next generation of NSW players."

Jaques scored 5350 runs for New South Wales in the Sheffield Shield and helped the side to two titles, while also being part of two one-day triumphs. In 11 Tests, he scored 902 runs at 47.47, but a back injury at an inopportune time limited his prospects in the baggy green. After finishing his career in Australia, he continued to play county cricket and this year is part of the Nottinghamshire side.
